If you are into four wheeling, biking, hiking or pretty much anything outdoors and you haven’t been to Moab Utah you need to put it at the top of your list for places to visit! The Jeep Jamboree held there every October is pretty much the end of the season stop for wheelers wanting to attend one of Jeep Jamboree USA’s many events held across the country. This year we attend and worked the event as the last stop on our around the country Jeep tour and this was the last of 7 events that we hit as we made our way from coast to coast. Moab is truly an outdoor lover’s paradise, there are so many things to take in and do in the area from Arches National Park, there are many trails for hikers and bikers as well as rafting trips and general sightseeing but we were there to wheel and wheel we did! We hit Poison Spider on the first day, Poison Spider is a great trail with some really good obstacles that will keep wheelers of all levels entertained and they are close enough together that you can stay busy all day but it’s not so hardcore that the less experienced crowd will have to worry about getting hurt or destroying their rigs. The story behind Poison Spider is that during the pioneer days when the settlers were crossing through there that a small child was bit by a spider and subsequently died from the bite. No one has ever confirmed to me that the story was or wasn’t true but it makes for an interesting tale to tell wheelers as they pass by the trailside memorial that is adorned with trinkets, toys and spare change that previous wheelers have left behind as they pass by. We had a blast as we hit spots like the “wedge” which is a v-notch climb that you want to take the right line or you can destroy the side of your rig if you happen to slide into the wedge. We also stopped for lunch and then hit the hidden arch that overlooks the Colorado River below and then made our way back out. There is a dinosaur footprint right at the entrance to the trail that is just a short hike from the parking lot that is well worth taking a walk up to check out. We spent the next day on one of Moab’s most popular trails, Hells Revenge. Hells Revenge is not the toughest trail out there but it does have some good challenging ledges there as well as some great scenery, for those that really want to test the boundaries of their vehicles and driving capabilities they can hit some of the very tough obstacles like Hell’s Gate, Tip Over Challenge or any of the Hot Tubs that can test the very best drivers with the most modified rigs. Those that want even a little more of a challenge can take on the Escalator which is a climb that you have a minimal margin of error and are smart to have a spotter if you want to try and get up it. We stayed an extra day just to do a little more wheeling and went out on Flat Iron Mesa. It is another great trail that takes you out into the Canyon Land area for some great scenic views and some fun obstacles. Moab is by far my favorite place in the country to plan a wheeling trip because the trail system is so diverse and the scenery is tough to beat with the La Sal Mountains in the back drop. It is one place that I highly recommend to wheelers or adventurers of all experience levels. As always any information on this or any of Jeep Jamboree USA’s events across the country can be found on their website at http://www.jeepjamboreeusa.com/. back to Our Jeepin' Adventures |
