Project 2
CJ Windshield
Replacement
Installed by Will Morgan
| level of difficulty: | 3/10 |
| approx. time to complete: | 45-60 minutes |
| tools required: |
3/8" rope, various small hand tools like screw drivers, pliers, 1/4" drive socket set and ratchet for removal of ducts and or mirror as well as wiper arms. A small shop vac is handy for clean up. Windex and towels. |
| potential side effects: |
Only being able to see better. |
Remove windshield wipers from exterior and defrost ducts on interior.
Take 3/8” rope and push up and under interior side of the rubber gasket. Starting in the middle and continuing t the outer edges at the bottom of both sides. In doing so you will relieve the gasket pressure that holds the glass in place. Starting in the center at the bottom where rope was previously placed, gently push outward on windshield while someone is prepared to help extract the windshield on the outside of the vehicle. (take precautions not to drop the windshield which can cause damage to the paint). As you push, the glass will pop out of the frame. Continue around the base until you can remove the windshield and gasket. It doesn’t take a lot of force to remove, just smooth even pressure.

With the glass and gasket removed, clean out windshield frame to remove any old dirt, rust, metal chunks or debrie that may have wound up there.
Remove rubber gasket from old windshield noting the position of old glass so you can correctly install on new windshield.
Once rubber gasket is installed on the new windshield, you will need to place the rope (initially used to relieve pressure in removing the glass) inside the gasket area that will be going towards the interior of the Jeep. The rope should start in the center, again at the bottom and continue all the way around until it overlaps by a couple of inches.
Next you will need the assistance of two people to hold the new windshield in place while a third person inside gently works the rope by pulling on one end of it to pull the gasket over the frame in the Jeep to hold the glass in place. Being careful not to tear the rubber gasket in the process. Gentle pressure from the outside of the vehicle is needed, but, excessive amounts will make it hard for the rope to pop over the frame with out tearing the gasket (gently with rope out, push from outside the glass, glass will shift into place).
Once the new windshield is in place, re-install the wipers and defrost.
Clean inside & out, you are ready to hit the trail.
